A diagnostic hearing test at Hinterland Hearing is a comprehensive assessment of ear and hearing function, for ages 3+. It typically includes:

- Video otoscopy: visual inspection of the ear canal and eardrum that is shown to you on a screen)
- Tympanometry: an automatic measure middle-ear pressure and eardrum movement
- Pure tone audiometry: testing hearing thresholds across frequencies
- Speech audiometry: assessing speech clarity and distortion to loud sounds
- Acoustic reflex testing: an automatic evaluation of middle-ear muscle responses.
- Explanation of results and treatment options
- Report to referring doctor
Rebates may be available through Medicare when referred by a GP or specialist, private health insurance for extras cover, and full or partial funding under the Hearing Services Program (HSP) for eligible pensioners and veterans.
We allow 1.5hrs for a diagnostic assessment, although it may take as little as 30 minutes in the case of normal hearing. This way we don’t have to rush the more complex cases.
The cost is $145 before rebates.
