A tinnitus assessment is a detailed evaluation designed to understand the cause, characteristics, and impact of tinnitus. It includes all components of a comprehensive diagnostic hearing assessment—video otoscopy, tympanometry, pure tone and speech audiometry—plus additional specialised tests. These include high-frequency audiometry (testing hearing from 8 kHz to 16 kHz), tinnitus pitch and loudness matching to identify how your tinnitus sounds and how loud it is, loudness discomfort levels to gauge sound sensitivity commonly associated with tinnitus, and minimum masking level and residual inhibition tests to assess how tinnitus responds to sound therapy. Together, these measures help identify underlying hearing changes and guide an effective management plan.
I am a registered provider of Oritone (formerly Brainwave TRx) and Neuromonics tinnitus treatments, both evidence-based sound therapies designed to retrain the brain’s response to tinnitus without requiring hearing aids. These programs combine customised acoustic stimulation with relaxation and counselling support to reduce tinnitus awareness and distress. While hearing aids are not essential for these treatments, some people with hearing loss find them beneficial for managing both tinnitus and hearing difficulties simultaneously. Every tinnitus management plan is tailored to individual needs to achieve long-term relief and improved quality of life.
An initial tinnitus assessment appointment is 1.5hrs, at a cost of $195 before rebates.
